what about your kids at your hair appointment?
At Innovations we want to be child friendly. We suggest that if your appointment will be longer than just a haircut then you should find someone to keep the kids so you can come alone. We do understand however that sometimes life happens and the kids need to tag along.
We want to share our thoughts with you on this touchy subject.
We do have legit reasons for asking, if at all possible, to leave the sweet babies at home.
1. We are using chemicals, hot irons and very sharp scissors. No stylist should be sued because your kid got burned on my curling iron while you weren't paying attention to them.
2. I want to give you my undivided attention and be able to concentrate on your hair, but if i am distracted by your child running, screaming, disrupting or coming close to hurting themselves, I can assure you that I am not as focused on your hair as you want me to be. I am a mom and love being one, but at work I'm your stylist, not your babysitter!
3. I guarantee you don't want to pay to replace my equipment so please don't allow your child to play with it. My salon is not a playground. Salon chairs seem fun to spin and pump up and down, but cost $200 or more each, shampoo bowls are intriguing but cost upwards of $1000 each, and even my clippers are $100. If your child breaks any of my equipment it costs me (and you) a fortune to replace.
4. The salon should be relaxing for you and other clients around you. We all need the escape from time to time from our very loved precious stinky children, and what is a better place then the salon for that escape. We like to offer wine, nice music, free WiFi, a very relaxing shampoo and delightful conversation. Unruly kids could certainly put an end to that relaxation!
Our policy is that if your child is under 5 and you bring them to your appointment that will last longer than 30 minutes we have the right to ask for a reschedule. It is completely unreasonable for a 2 or 3 year old to be expected to comply with adult rules for a substantial amount of time.
If husband gets called into work last minute or babysitter calls and cancels, consider first how well your child will do in a small quiet space sitting still for hours. If the thought scares you then you should definitely come alone. We are always happy to accommodate a reschedule if you cant work out a backup sitter and feel bringing little johnny could be a nightmare.
If the kids must tag along, PLEASE come prepared. I have a kids corner with coloring books but I know it wont keep a kid busy for 2+ hours. Try bringing snacks, books, toys or a tablet.
Bribery works wonders with little ones. If your child knows they will be rewarded for good behavior then chances are, they will behave. Promise them an ice cream if they can behave while Mommy has her hair done.
Consider other clients. They are paying with their hard earned money for this hair appointment, same as you.
The only time children are a problem in my salon is when they are not behaving. Its not safe and makes it difficult for your stylist to concentrate.
One more thought to wrap this up... I am a mom first. My son is #1 priority and I would not have it any other way. That being said, I do enjoy grocery shopping, going to the doctor or having a pedicure without my son at my side. When he is in the salon, or anywhere else with me, he is equipped to behave.
